Making Holiday Flags

Today we made some celebratory flags. It is a very special day in the country, with the release of Gilad Shalit, and although the topic is a bit heavy for their age, we spoke about the significance of this, and how we can celebrate with his family. The children all love getting involved in the art activities, and although some are more cautious when it comes to getting their fingers dirty, they soon forget their reserve and become enthusiastic about the task. It is always interesting to see how they approach these tasks, and seems to tell so much about their personal approach to life. Some are very planned, minimalist, while others through caution to the wind and attack the task. It is a very important part of emotional expression and motor development. It is also very important to take the time to ask them about what they have created, praise their efforts, and encourage them to talk about what they have learnt. Child often find it easier to talk when they have an object to talk through.
