Montessori and the Outdoor Environment

‘It is also necessary for his psychical development to place the soul of the child in contact with creation, in order that he may lay up for himself treasure from the directly educating forces of living nature.’ – Maria Montessori, The Montessori Method

We have been blessed with the ideal outdoor setting for the children to explore and grow. The idea of the outdoor Montessori setting is to encourage the children to independently explore and engage with their environment. The small gardens planted by the children are of particular interest to them, and they enjoy tending these, watering them and keeping them clean.

Being outdoors is essential for their sense of well-being, and is an important aspect of development, as it provides the opportunity to challenge themselves on a larger scale. It also offers them the space and freedom to explore their sense, to be physically active and experience the natural world first hand.

As Spring nears we will be setting up class outdoors, planting gardens, setting up nature tables, and developing their interest in their environment.
