Working with children of such a young age can be a challenge in terms of establishing a montessori setting. It is their first experience of this sort of environment and developing a respect for the equipement, being self directed and respecting one another’s space and activities are all new challenges. So far we are taking baby steps and the children are all such keen learners. Making use of small work mats is a great way of giving the children a sense of their one space, and helps the rest of the group identify that child’s space so as not to interrupt their process of learning. The children are becoming very use to this idea and are now taking out the mats independently and choosing activities. Doing this at home is a good idea to reinforce the concept.
